Subtalar Arthritis

Comprehensive diagnosis, symptoms, causes, and treatment options

What is Subtalar Arthritis?

Subtalar arthritis is a degenerative condition affecting the joint beneath the ankle, responsible for side-to-side motion of the foot. When this joint deteriorates, walking on uneven surfaces becomes painful and restricted. Early diagnosis and expert care are key to preserving mobility and comfort.

Symptoms

  • Deep hindfoot pain, especially on uneven ground
  • Pain during walking, standing, or prolonged activity
  • Stiffness and reduced side-to-side foot movement
  • Swelling around the heel and hindfoot
  • Difficulty with balance and slope walking

Causes

  • Post-traumatic damage following calcaneal or ankle fractures
  • Long-standing hindfoot malalignment
  • Inflammatory arthritis such as rheumatoid arthritis
  • Repeated stress or degeneration over time

Treatment Options

Treatment is individualized based on symptom severity and functional goals.

Non-Surgical Management

Activity modification and custom orthotics
Targeted physiotherapy to improve strength and stability
Anti-inflammatory medications and image-guided injections

Surgical Management

For persistent pain or advanced disease:

Subtalar arthroscopy in select early cases
Subtalar joint fusion to relieve pain and restore stability
Corrective procedures to improve foot alignment
