Ankle Fractures

Comprehensive diagnosis, symptoms, causes, and treatment options

What is Ankle Fractures?

An ankle fracture refers to a break in one or more bones forming the ankle joint, often disrupting joint alignment and stability. Prompt, expert management is essential to restore anatomy, preserve joint function, and prevent long-term complications such as arthritis.

Symptoms

  • Sudden, intense ankle pain following injury
  • Swelling and bruising around the ankle
  • Difficulty or inability to bear weight
  • Visible deformity in severe fractures

Causes

  • Twisting injuries or severe ankle sprains
  • Falls from height or on uneven surfaces
  • Road traffic accidents
  • Sports-related trauma

Treatment Options

Treatment is individualized based on fracture type, stability, and patient needs.

Non-Surgical Management

Only recommended in undisplaced and isolated lateral malleolus fracture with stable syndesmosis.
Weight bearing radiographs are done to test for syndesmotic stability in such isolated fractures.

Surgical Management

Surgery is recommended for unstable or displaced fractures and may include:

Precision fracture fixation with plates and screws
Anatomical restoration to reduce future arthritis risk
