Hallux Valgus

Comprehensive diagnosis, symptoms, causes, and treatment options

What is Hallux Valgus?

(Bunion)

Hallux valgus, commonly known as a bunion, is a progressive deformity of the big toe joint where the great toe drifts toward the lesser toes, creating a prominent bony swelling on the inner side of the foot. Beyond appearance, this condition can cause pain, imbalance, and difficulty with footwear if left untreated.

Symptoms

  • Pain and tenderness over the big toe joint
  • Visible bony prominence on the inner side of the foot
  • Swelling, redness, or irritation with shoe wear
  • Difficulty wearing narrow or formal footwear
  • Stiffness or reduced motion of the big toe

Causes

  • Genetic predisposition and inherited foot structure
  • Prolonged use of tight or high-heeled footwear
  • Flat feet or abnormal foot mechanics
  • Ligament laxity or inflammatory arthritis
  • Age-related changes in joint alignment

Treatment Options

Treatment is tailored to symptom severity and lifestyle expectations.
