Foot Drop

Comprehensive diagnosis, symptoms, causes, and treatment options

What is Foot Drop?

Foot drop is a neuromuscular condition characterized by difficulty lifting the front part of the foot, leading to an altered walking pattern and increased risk of tripping. Rather than a disease itself, foot drop is a sign of underlying nerve or muscle dysfunction that requires expert evaluation and targeted treatment.

Symptoms

  • Difficulty lifting the foot while walking
  • Dragging of toes or frequent tripping
  • High-stepping or slapping gait
  • Weakness around the ankle and foot
  • Numbness or altered sensation in some cases

Causes

  • Peroneal nerve injury or compression
  • Lumbar spine disorders such as disc prolapse
  • Neurological conditions including stroke or neuropathy
  • Prolonged leg crossing or immobilization
  • Muscle disorders or systemic illnesses

Treatment Options

Management focuses on addressing the underlying cause and restoring safe mobility.

Non-Surgical Care

Ankle–foot orthoses (AFOs) for gait support
Targeted physiotherapy and nerve stimulation
Treatment of the underlying neurological condition

Surgical Solutions

For selected cases:

Nerve decompression or repair
Tendon transfer procedures to restore foot lift
Advanced reconstructive techniques for long-term function
